Plot Summary

The story follows Renee, a teenage girl who feels somewhat disconnected from the world around her. Her life takes an unexpected turn when she discovers a strange alien creature hidden in the desert.

At first, fear takes over—as it would for anyone encountering something unknown. But slowly, curiosity replaces fear, and Renee begins to form a quiet bond with the creature, which she names “Croak.”

As the connection between them grows stronger, the outside world becomes a threat. Government agents begin tracking the alien, turning Renee’s discovery into a dangerous secret. What follows is a journey of escape, trust and emotional growth, as Renee must decide whether to protect the creature or give it up.

Direction & Cinematography

Matthew Loren Oates directs the film with a grounded and intimate style. Instead of relying on heavy visual effects or large action sequences, he keeps the focus on characters and emotions.

The desert landscapes play a big role in setting the tone. They create a sense of isolation that mirrors Renee’s emotional state, while also making the story feel more personal and real. The visuals are simple but effective, supporting the storytelling rather than overpowering it.

Strengths

One of the film’s biggest strengths is how naturally it builds its emotional core. The relationship between Renee and the alien never feels forced—it develops slowly and believably, which makes the audience invest in it. Lulu Wilson delivers a sincere and grounded performance that carries the film from start to finish.

Another strong point is the film’s approach to science fiction. Instead of turning the alien into a threat, it presents it as something misunderstood, which adds depth and meaning to the story. The movie quietly explores themes like empathy, fear of the unknown and human connection without becoming overly dramatic.

Weaknesses

Despite its strong emotional elements, the film may not appeal to everyone. Viewers expecting fast-paced action or a traditional alien thriller might find it slow and understated.

The story also follows a somewhat familiar structure, especially for those who have seen similar “human meets alien” narratives before. At times, the pacing dips, particularly in the middle portion, where the film takes its time developing the bond between the characters.

Review

Xeno feels more like a personal story than a spectacle. It’s the kind of film that doesn’t try to impress you with scale but instead grows on you through small, meaningful moments.

The movie succeeds when it focuses on its emotional side. The silence, the interactions and the subtle changes in Renee’s character make the story feel real. While it may not deliver big cinematic thrills, it offers something quieter and more thoughtful.

OTT Release Update

Xeno is now officially available for streaming on Amazon Prime Video. After its limited theatrical release, the film has made its digital debut, giving a wider audience the chance to experience this emotional sci-fi story from the comfort of their homes.

The movie is currently included with a standard Prime subscription in many regions, while in some areas it may also be available for rent or purchase. Its arrival on OTT makes it much more accessible, especially for viewers who prefer character-driven and meaningful science fiction over big-budget spectacle.

If you enjoy slow-burn storytelling and heartfelt narratives, Xeno is definitely worth adding to your watchlist on Prime Video this week.

Worth Watching or Not?

If you enjoy slow, emotional sci-fi films that focus on relationships rather than action, Xeno is definitely worth watching. It’s a film that asks you to be patient and open-minded, but in return, it gives you a heartfelt story that stays with you.

However, if you’re looking for intense action, fast pacing or a typical alien invasion story, this might not be the right choice for you.
